Social Distancing

By Matthew Schultz

The intimacy
of this
air we breathe,
between us
a contradiction unmasked
speaks in hushed tones
and we have
gone deaf to it,
this viral utterance
passed around
like an official term
as if we can
no longer accept
the taste of silence––
we are but shadows
of the sparrows
that fly above us.
