Three Poems

By Anna Cates

LOVE IN THE TIME OF COVID

Spring 2020. No effervescent sparkles beside the fireplace. No wine glasses clinking. No strains from a violin. Only our “great adaptation,” this social distancing . . .

pandemic longing for the daffodils to open

2020

After shutdown, I watched them the whole lonely afternoon, alone on the beach, mother and daughter. The geese have yet to return.

the red balloon
escapes over the briny waves—
March gales
so briefly they are ours
before slipping from our grasp

(Previously published in Open: Journal of Arts & Letters)

LONG DRIVE HOME

Returning from a doctor’s appointment, a sign along the road detains my attention: Foster parents needed . . .

death toll
a hellish masquerade
stringing us along

(Previously published in Femku)
