Haikus in the Time of Covid-19

By Pauline Hall

Thinking of their faces
beautifying my own
now ready to Zoom.

Eight years old. He’s sure
our clean clever modern world
won’t know plague.

If the churches weren’t sealed
they’d be crowded with empty
-handed grandparents

Seven empty buses
the funeral procession
of a rough sleeper

By the Subway tracks
two mice fighting over a crumb
us in a god’s eye

I never found out
how The Sopranos ends, not
like The World at War.

Published in Cyphers, Stony Thursday. The Cream of the Milk  a broadsheet  about famous and infamous Irishwomen. I have published two novels: Grounds, and Eoin Doherty and the Fixers .

Most evocative and an interesting format…and educational for me as I had never heard of Haiku!

Pauline,
I enjoyed your insightful evocations of our Covid world – especially 4 and 5.

Lovely, thoughtful haikus, Pauline. The third one is very poignant – an elegy for so much.

These are brilliant, clever and observant, Pauline. You paint big and true pictures with few words. One, three and four are my favourites.
